Dr. Shelly Bazemore
Dr. Shelly Bazemore is currently an assistant professor and field experience coordinator at Virginia State University. She is teaching and facilitating pre-service teaching experiences at the Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate levels of education. She is also a hybrid adjunct professor at Longwood University where she works with practicing administrators and supervisors. She has previous experience as the Assistant Superintendent of Administration, Operations and Personnel in Prince George, Director of HR in Petersburg, Director of Instruction in Caroline, School Improvement Specialist at the Virginia Department of Education, 10 years as a special education teacher and 8 years of administrative/central office experience at elementary, secondary, and alternative schools within Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico Counties. Shelly received her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Special Education from Longwood University, Master's Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Richmond and Doctorate Degree in Education Administration and Policy Studies from the George Washington University. She has served on the VASPA Executive Board for 8 years as a Legislative Chair (4 years), Member at Large (2 years) and Vice-President (2 years).
Executive Director– Carole Nelson
Carole received her undergraduate degree in Middle Grades Education from James Madison University with a minor in Developmental Reading, and earned her Masters Degree in Administration and Supervision from Longwood University. She has 15 years of teaching experience in high school and middle school, and administrative experience in elementary and high school as an assistant principal. Administrative experiences include serving as a middle school principal for three years, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administration for Mecklenburg County Public Schools for five years, and Acting Superintendent in Mecklenburg County Public Schools. She also served as Director of Human Resources for Charlottesville City Schools for six years. Carole currently serves as the Human Resources Manager for the Virginia Institute of Autism.
Ms. Dianne Whiting is currently the Coordinator of Human Resources for Suffolk Public Schools. She has 30 years of experience in Human Resources including experience working for Federal, local, and now Public School government. She has worked for Suffolk Public Schools for the last 15 years. Dianne received her undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland in Psychology. She received her Master’s Degree in Human Resources from Old Dominion University. This term as Treasurer for VASPA will be Dianne’s fourth term serving on the VASPA Board.
Past President– Dr. Wayne K. Smith
Wayne received both his Bachelor and Masters degrees in early childhood education from Norfolk State University, his Masters in Educational Leadership from Old Dominion, and both his Certificate of Advance Graduate Study and Doctor of Education from Virginia Tech. He is retired from Southampton Schools and is a professor of Education at Hampton University.
Seza holds a Master’s degree in Education and Human Development from The George Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts and Associate in Applied Science degrees in Business Administration. Seza currently serves as a Human Resources Specialist for Henrico County Public Schools, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s 6th largest public school division. Seza has served Henrico Schools, in various roles, since 2002, and since 2006 in the area of Human Resources. Seza is a subject matter expert in a range of areas to include recruitment and talent acquisition, retention, turnover analysis, employee relations, employee engagement, coaching, investigations, leave and absence management, Virginia Department of Education licensure, and compliance matters such as Family and Medical Leave Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, and Workers’ Compensation. Seza is a member of Society of Human Resource Management and is a SHRM Certified Professional. Seza is also a member of the American Association of School Personnel Administrators and serves on the Executive Board for the Virginia Association of School Personnel Administrators.
