James Madison University is hosting the fifth conference
dedicated to showcasing student success programs from across
the commonwealth. Please make plans to join us on Friday,
October 12, 2007 and consider presenting a program. This
year’s theme is Student Success in Virginia: Preparing
Citizens in an Everchanging World.” The conference will
consist of workshops and presentations that will provide
participants with strategies, models, and resources related to
transforming our students into more productive and enlightened
citizens who are engaged in their community. In the past, over
125 Student and Academic Affairs professionals and graduate
students, representing two-year, four-year, public and private
institutions from across the commonwealth have participated.
As in previous years, we expect again to have a keynote
speaker of a national caliber. Watch for our announcement
later this summer.
Both Academic and Student Affairs professionals have the
student as their primary concern. This manifests itself under
many different guises. Students require both academic advising
and career advising. Students need help both in the residential
and academic halls. There are challenges in motivating
students in the classroom and channeling their energies outside
the classroom. Have you developed solutions or do you have a
different point of view that sheds new light on an old problem?
We are searching for a variety of presentations and workshops
that will stimulate and inspire the members of university and
college communities in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Under
the umbrella of the conference theme of preparing citizens who
will be committed towards being a positive force in an
everchanging world, we would like to have both Student Affairs
and Academic Affairs liberally represented.
Please consider sharing your experiences, expertise, and
evidence with your colleagues by presenting at this conference.
Proposals accepted for the conference will result in discounted
registration fees for presenters. The program proposal form
and further information can be found at http://www.jmu.
edu/stusuccess/conference/index.htm. The submission deadline
is Friday, July 13, 2007.
We are looking forward to making this conference an inspiring
experience from which participants will draw practical ideas that
will enhance their preparation of student-citizens. Please
forward this letter to anyone whom you think would be interested
in participating or attending. Towards the end of summer, we
will be sending additional conference information. We hope to
see you in October.
Sincerely,
Programming Committee

Hi VASPA and VACUHO!!!
Didn't you have a great time at the VSSC conference this past
November? The program presenters did a great job of bringing
great ideas, topics, & discussions to the mountain. We want you
to be a part of the experience of presenting as well.
It is time to start thinking about a program proposal for VSSC
2007!!! Proposals are due June 30, 2007. The program
proposal form is now available.
www.virginiastudentservicesconference.org
Please be patient with our web site as we iron out a few glitches.
BUT you can still enter a program proposal!!!!
And, this year's program committee is here to help. If you have
an initial idea and want some assistance developing it into a
program or if you like to bounce ideas off of other colleagues,
the program committee is willing to help you out. All you need to
do is email them your ideas and they will have an email dialogue
with you about ways to develop it further. We will still be using
tracks again this year at the conference, so the committee is
available according to these tracks. They are different this year,
so please read through them!
Email the following committee members for assistance with the
tracks they are associated with:
Kristin Cooper--Residence Life track
cooperk@lynchburg.edu
Jim Lindley-Community College track
jlindley@dcc.vccs.edu
Ginger Ambler--Counseling and Development (student or
professional)
vmambl@wm.edu
Lauren Grainger--Student Activities track
lugrai@wm.edu
Kristen Whalen--Graduate track
kwhalen@vwc.edu
Monique Colclough-Housing and Facilities Track
mxcolc@wm.edu
Cathy Pulliam--Undecided track (not quite sure which track it
would fit under)
cpulliam@dcc.vccs.edu
We hope this gives you the incentive to start putting together
that program proposal. Presenting is a great way to share all
the great things that are happening at your institution with your
colleagues, while gaining some professional development for
yourself as well.
We look forward to hearing from you soon & seeing your
proposal in June!
